Line Segments

There are so many dazzling thoughts passing through Inky’s brain that she thinks she may be getting dizzy! It looks like this “radius” is divided into short pieces by the circles. Inky fondly recalls the phrase “line segments”. And what about “Venn diagrams”? They never made sense to her, but they had poetic implications! She’dContinue reading “Line Segments”

She Has No Idea

Inky is pointing at a word she has never seen before. She didn’t care much for school and had no respect for her teachers! It is quite fortunate that her friend Mr. Stork is both older and wiser. He was lucky enough to attend a prestigious school with lots of advanced math classes. So, ofContinue reading “She Has No Idea”

It’s Old, Very Old!

As Inky turns the pages, she realizes that they don’t feel like ordinary paper. They feel soft as silk and they are very thick. The images are complicated and mysterious at the same time. What could these diagrams mean? Who could have drawn them?

Words and Pictures

Mr. Stork is very happy to find a weighty old dictionary with millions of (it seems) new words. There are even some very small illustrations next to some of the words. These pictures are far more helpful than the written definitions most of the time: if you’d never seen an umbrella, how could you possiblyContinue reading “Words and Pictures”

A Cast-Off Library

Although Inky is not a serious reader, she loves to pick up books and examine them. She loves old images in antique books. The things people believed in the past seem so sincerely decorative now! Inky would be the first to admit that she doesn’t know much. She never went very far in school, butContinue reading “A Cast-Off Library”

Treasure Palace

It’s exciting to enter a dark place from the outside, stopping for a moment to let your eyes get accustomed to low light. Shapes that have no special meaning can morph into useful objects and beautiful treasures. A brass lamp that needs a little polish may look sad and abandoned but to knowing eye, (andContinue reading “Treasure Palace”

Left Behind

Even in her youth, Inky was a fan of old cast-offs: great valuables and they’re all free! She likes to browse for good stuff that doesn’t cost anything. And she loves to introduce her friends to the pleasures of “re-purposing” or “up-cycling”, discovering new uses for other people’s castaways.

Seagulls Retreat

Time to get back to the quest! The seagulls have finally flown away and peace descends on the dump. Our two explorers are now free to continue their book-seeking mission without further interruption. These squawking seagulls bring to mind the bad actors who search endlessly for selfies with their mouths wide open in over-stated amusement.

How Rude!

Mr.Stork and Inky have settled for a minute on level ground, but they have been left high and dry, in shambles. While struggling to get to her feet, Inky wonders if someone actually taught the seagulls their bad manners or if they come by them naturally.

April Fool’s Day

Spring is often elusive and unreliable, apt to come and go with very little warning. So today, when you look out of your window, do it with a grain of salt. But remember, if you happen to be a bird, do not allow anyone to put salt on your tail…. Do “all things come toContinue reading “April Fool’s Day”
